About ordinal inscription files

Ordinal inscriptions are information written directly to the Bitcoin blockchain, associated with small units of Bitcoin called satoshis. Because Bitcoin block space is limited, it can be difficult and expensive to successfully create inscriptions containing large amounts of information (i.e. create inscriptions containing large image file sizes).

At Gamma, we help users resize, compress, and convert files to highly optimized file types to ensure the amount of storage needed for their inscription is as low as it can be. This can mean some impact to the visual quality of the image you inscribe, depending on the original fidelity and format.

Best practices for image file uploads

For best results, we recommend starting with a small file size that you're comfortable with visually so we don't need to compress your file any further. We will not resize, compress, or convert any supported file types below 60kb in size (or GIFs below 200kb in size).

For images above 60kb (or GIFs above 200kb), we will resize, compress, and convert files in a way that is generally ideal for the widest source materials.

Supported file types and how they're handled

Refer to the chart below outlining the specific ways we handle each file type and size you upload. Please note for individual inscriptions, you can use to High resolution toggle to increase 60kb limits to 390kb.

File type File size* How it's handled
WEBP, JPEG, PNG, SVG

Below 60kb

File inscribed as-is. Associated metadata will be removed for security purposes.
WEBP, JPEG, PNG 61kb - 10mb File will be resized to a maximum width/height, compressed, and converted to WEBP format. Associated metadata will be removed for security purposes.
SVG 60kb+ Not accepted. You must reduce the size of your file and try again.
GIF Below 200kb File will be inscribed as-is. Associated metadata will be removed for security purposes.
GIF 200kb - 10mb File will be resized and compressed. Your GIF's size is generally tied to the number of image frames inside it, so a smaller number of frames will result in a larger image height/width inscribed. Associated metadata will be removed for security purposes.
Any listed file type 10mb+ Not accepted. You must reduce the size your file and try again.
Other file types not listed - Not supported.

* If your uploaded file size exceeds listed maximums by a small percentage, we will in some cases still accept your file.

Important notices about image compression

The process outlined above explains how we will resize, compress, and convert files uploaded to our ordinal inscription creator portal. While we made good faith attempts to ensure visual consistency among compressed images in our testing, image compression techniques are far from perfect, and it's possible your particular image doesn't compress or convert in a way you find visually appealing or acceptable.

We always recommend starting with a file below 60kb in size (or a GIF below 200kb in size) so that we do not have to resize, compress, or convert your file prior to inscribing it. Gamma is not responsible for a visual outcome you find unappealing or unacceptable and we cannot and do not offer refunds for such images.
