If you’d like to create your own inscriptions on Gamma, several options are available.

You can inscribe a single image, file, or text, inscribe several in bulk, or create a collection mint.

In this article, we will cover individual inscriptions. For bulk inscriptions, please refer to the linked article.

If you want information on creating a collection mint, please see the related article.

To get started, connect your Ordinal-compatible wallet.

Once your wallet is connected, click Create in the top menu, select “Create on Bitcoin” then choose “Create inscriptions”.

You will be taken to this page, where you can choose the type of inscription you want to create. It can be images, files, text, markdown, or even multiple delegates of an existing inscription.

Single image inscription

Click Images or files to inscribe just one ordinal. You will be taken to the corresponding page. Note that the file size limit is 360 KB.

Once you've uploaded your image, click Continue. Clicking "Clear" below the Continue button will remove the image and let you start over.

Once you've uploaded your image, click Continue. Clicking "Clear" below the Continue button will remove the image and let you start over.

On the following tab, you will be asked to enter the following information to set up your inscription:

  1. Inscription receive address: Where the final inscription will be sent
  2. Refund address: Where your Bitcoin will be sent if the inscription fails
  3. Inscribe as children under a parent inscription: Whether you want this inscription to be a "child" of an existing "parent" inscription
  4. Inscription Selection: How the service selects the Bitcoin unit (UTXO) to create the inscription on
  5. On-chain Metadata: Whether to add additional permanent data to the inscription
  6. Postage: The minimum amount of satoshis attached to the inscription itself
  7. Transaction Fee: The network fee for the transaction to get it confirmed by Bitcoin miners

1. Address Settings

These settings define where the inscription is sent and where a refund goes if the process fails

Setting Description Example/Default
Inscription Receive Address The Bitcoin address where the final inscription asset will be "airdropped" and held. This address must be compatible with Ordinals (e.g. a Taprootcompatible address) bc1p... (Ordinal address)
Refund Address A Bitcoin address where any refundable funds will be sent if the inscription creation process fails (e.g. if the fee is too low and the transaction times out). bc1q... (Refund address)
Send Options Choose to send the inscription to a single address or airdrop to multiple addresses (distribute copies) Send to one address (Selected)

2. Inscribe as Children Under a Parent Inscription?

Option Description Additional Fee
No thanks Suitable for most standard inscriptions. The inscription will be a standalone asset. None
Yes, add parent child Create an onchain association, allowing the inscription to inherit traits or provenance from a designated "parent." Additional 5,000 sat fee per child

3. How Would You Like to Inscribe?

Choose if you'd like to inscribe on any sat (satoshi) or on a special sat that you already own.

Option Description Additional Fee
Automatic selection The service automatically chooses a suitable UTXO from your wallet to use for the inscription. Recommended for most users. None
Reinscribe existing inscription Overwrite or add data to an inscription that already exists on the blockchain. Additional 5,000 sat fee
Special UTXO or Custom UTXO Manually select a specific UTXO to inscribe on. This is for advanced use cases. Additional 5,000 sat fee

4. Add On-Chain Metadata?

Since we are inscribing a single image, you can easily enter the information using a CSV-based method to add metadata.

Option Description Additional Fee
No thanks Suitable for most standard inscriptions. None
Yes, add metadata Adds extra data (like properties, creators, or descriptions) to the inscription, which increases bitcoin fees due to the larger transaction size. Varies (Increases Bitcoin fees)

5. Customize Postage

"Postage" is the minimum amount of satoshis that must be kept attached to the inscribed UTXO. This is required to make the inscription valid and transferable

Option Description
Standard postage The service recommends the standard, lowest viable amount of satoshis.
Custom amount Allows you to manually enter a higher amount of postage.

6. Set Your Transaction Fee

Option Description Estimated Confirmation Time
Economy fee The lowest fee rate Within hours to days
Normal fee A balanced fee rate Within a few hours (Selected)
Higher fee A premium fee rate for quick confirmation Within an hour
Custom fee Allows you to manually set the sat/vByte rate Based on selected fee

Additionally, we finally added support for custom fee rates below 1 sat/vByte, so you can broadcast works at as little as 0.2 sats/vByte.

As we note, very low fees can sometimes take a while  to confirm, but if you're not in a hurry, it's a very cost-effective way to get work onchain.
