What is Parent-Child Provenance on BTC?
Parent-child provenance on Bitcoin ordinals links data inscriptions, such as digital art, through a transaction lineage that traces each piece back to its origin or "parent." The blockchain tracks all transactions, ensuring transparency and authenticity by allowing verification of an asset's history, including its creator, transformations, and ownership. This system preserves the authenticity and evolution of digital content on the blockchain.
Step 1: Inscribe Your Grandparent on Gamma
Start by inscribing your grandparent on Gamma. Our individual inscription service has no service fee. You can follow this tutorial for guidance: YouTube Video.
The grandparent can be a simple text inscription with your name or include metadata such as an artist bio, or it can be your logo etc. Text will be the most cost efficient grandparent.
This grandparent inscription serves as your artist seal on the Bitcoin blockchain and will have subsequent children inscriptions (who may have children themselves and hence the phrasing grandparent) linked to it.
Step 2: Inscribe the Parent Ordinals
Once you receive your grandparent inscription in your wallet, proceed to an inscription service like https://chisel.xyz/ or Inscribe.dev to create the next set of inscriptions, which will act as the parents. These parents will form the foundation of a new collection of ordinals.
Important: You must retain ownership of your grandparent inscription. If you sell or lose it, you will not be able to add new inscriptions underneath it.
Step 3: Linking the Family of Works
On platforms such as Chisel, you need to transfer the grandparent as part of the inscription process. This transfer is safe and necessary to establish the on-chain linkage of the family of works.
For detailed steps on transferring an ordinal, refer to this guide: YouTube Video.
Ensure that your return address is your ordinals address, which should start with bc1p...
.
Metadata Format Example
When adding metadata on-chain with your files, use the following JSON format:
{
"Artist": "Rachel Suzanne Tien Wood",
"Year taken": "2022",
"Location": "Colorado, USA",
"Camera": "Sony A7RV",
"Lens": "200-600mm"
}
Step 4: Creating Child Inscriptions
Repeat the process under the parent inscriptions to create child inscriptions, continuing the lineage of your collection on the Bitcoin blockchain.
